The first step in salvation is repentance. We come to realize that our sin separates us from God and other people. At a deep level, we agree with Jesus that we need His righteousness and will never be or do anything that will earn our salvation.
Second, we put our faith in the finished work Jesus did on the cross and recognize that this is what reconciles us to God. It is hard for us, as humans, to admit we need a Savior. Pride can prevent us from humbly admitting this.
Thirdly, we are called by Jesus to follow him when we walk the path with him, we experience abundant life filled with joy in spite of our circumstances. When we sin it robs us of this experience. We must repent and get back on the path with Jesus again. This walk cannot be on our terms - we must be all in.
True salvation consists of repentance, believing or faith and following Jesus. This is the path to abundant life.
