Whole Prayerby Walter Wangerin, Jr.

Whole Prayer

recommended by: Deb Bellevue

Prayer is meant to be a holy conversation about the everyday needs, sorrows, and joys that shape our lives.  But too often our efforts fall short of our hopes.  We feel listless, frustrated, or thirsty, as though caught in a desert storm.  We long for the refreshing presence of God to clear the air and quench our thirst.  Perhaps we have not yet learned what it really means to pray, to talk with God rather than to Him.  “WHOLE PRAYER” explores the dynamics of prayer; of speaking, of listening, of waiting, and of hearing God’s voice.  If you are looking for a deeper relationship with God, “WHOLE PRAYER” may be a guide for you to explore.

I really like this book.  I read it at a time when I was struggling to connect with God and saw prayer more as a legalistic exercise than a conversation with the One who loves me most.  It was very freeing.  He examines the four parts of prayer; we speak, God listens, God speaks, we listen and in doing so set me free to begin a new way of thinking about prayer.  It felt like a breath of fresh air, especially from the dusty religious view of prayer that I had held for so many years.  It really helped me to see that prayer is going on all the time between God and me.  It made prayer more inviting, God and I connecting together, me sharing my heart with Him and He sharing His heart with me.
