I read this book years ago and it really helped me understand that although Christ loves us for who we are with nothing for us to do except to accept Him as Lord and Savior, we also have to cultivate practices in our lives to deepen our relationship with Him. It does take two to make a relationship work and this book helped me to discover new ways as well as remind me of old was of connecting with Jesus. We examine the inward disciplines of meditation, prayer, fasting and study to offer avenues of personal examination and change; the outward disciplines of simplicity, solitude, submission, and service to help prepare us to make the world and better place; and the corporate disciplines of confession, worship, guidance, and celebration to bring us nearer to one another and to God.
